DEATH BECOMES HER FT. MISSGUIDED

Recently, Sean and I watched one of my all-time favorite 90’s dark comedies — Death Becomes Her — and if you’ve never seen it, spoilers ahead, and go watch it! It follows the story of a once-Broadway star Madeline Ashton (played by THE Meryl Streep) and her rival frenemy Helen Sharp (Goldie Hawn). Long story short, Madeline steals Helen’s betrothed — sending Helen into an absolute spin, until suddenly, she emerges as a new version of herself that’s uncannily a little too youthful. In a desperate desire to look younger, too, Madeline goes to witch doctress, Lisle, who gives her a potion that will return her to her own youthful allure. Things spin out further, and the whole story is such an interesting take on time, growing older, and the limits of the human body. Sure, the potion makes your young soul last forever, but these ladies learn that their bodies eventually won’t be able to keep up. It’s such a cool tale, and on my recent trip to the Catskills, it was certainly on my mind to wear a look inspired by the style of these characters.

If there’s any type of outfit that’s always youthful, it’s a leather dress. And I couldn’t resist picking this one up from Missguided a few weeks ago. Since it was ultra cold up in Hunter, I opted for a black turtleneck bodysuit underneath to keep me extra warm. I added this stunning faux fur coat from Nasty Gal overtop. Finally, I paired everything with these chunky platform boots — and I think the whole look really screams 90s Goldie Hawn with a nice nod to this film.

As Shakespeare so eloquently wrote:

“For though the camomile, the more it is trodden on, the faster it grows, so youth, the more it is wasted, the sooner it wears.”

[Henry IV Part 1, 2.4]

Youth is most certainly wasted on the young.
