A BOLD SELF FEAT. TOPSHOP
Self awareness. We see it in literature everywhere, and one of my favorite stories where it takes center stage is in Othello. Because of Othello’s overwhelming jealousy and inability to recognize his own insecurities, he kills Desdemona at the drop of a hat — barely giving her a chance to explain herself and her “alleged" misconduct. To him, his act is justified — but in reality, he was too preoccupied with his own selfish desires and actions to see anything past them. Othello does not owe Desdemona an apology in this instance — (what is he gonna be like, sorry I killed you, lol) rather, he owes her soul empathy, taking responsibility and recognition for his unsavory act. I once read a quote regarding this subject that stuck with me pretty well — it went along the lines of this: two highly self-aware people have the best chance of success, two highly unaware people will be able to have a relationship with one another, but it won’t be as successful, and if one person is highly self-aware, and the other is not, the relationship will no longer continue to make sense, and for Othello and Desdemona, I’d say that’s pretty spot on.
To celebrate self awareness, I decided to go out with a totally bold look this month. I started with this striped bodysuit I got a while ago at UO (it’s still available for $19!) and paired it with a black denim skirt also from UO. Next, I paired everything together with this orange cropped Topshop denim jacket , white Reeboks and this super cute travel wallet from Calpak. I leave you with another unaware quote from our protagonist (aka, something you should not strive to aim for).
“I kissed thee ere I killed thee: no way but this, Killing myself, to die upon a kiss.”
[Othello 5.2]
(Not only so dramatic, but so unaware..)
